This Croatian expatriate spot relates the homey feel of a Dalmatian coast flat with photos of the homeland and a clock keeping Zagreb time just above a matching timepiece for New York. On warm days, the bar’s front windows swing open and men with scruffy beards dangle their cigarettes over the sidewalk. This mellow scene gives way to fervent nationalism during major national sporting events, such as World Cup qualifiers or European basketball championships. (A team loss may dampen the mood but perpetually flowing vodka lifts it back up.) All Astorians—Croatian or not—are warmly received by Denis Lisica, the young owner sipping cappuccino at the end of a bar stocked with Croat liquors like Sljivovica (a sweet plum brandy) and Pelinkovac (a syrupy Jaeger equivalent).
