The arty come to party at this democratic Spanish Harlem bar, gallery, and performance space named after owner Eliana Godoy's storytelling grandfather. Opportunities to soak up the creativity abound: poetry readings, film festivals, live concerts, and free-form open-mike nights that have been known to feature belly dancers and martial artists. Beyond the ever-changing art exhibit (curated by the nonprofit Art for Change) adorning the front walls, the setting resembles the inside of a piñata: Color runs riot via plastic flowers, Christmas lights, and mismatched tables and upholstered chairs. And those revolutionaries whose visages grace T-shirts lining one wall aren’t simply décor; they’re declarations of this club’s raison d’etre with all of any night's cover (actually a suggested donation) going straight to the performers while money made from the equal exchange Zapatista coffee benefits farmers in Nicaragua, Peru, and the Chiapas region. Politics aside, there's righteous refreshment to be found in the deliciously simple Cuba Libre.
