At this snug, contemporary bar with dark-orange walls, the sounds of uncorking and pouring gets the conversation flowing. Two wooden counters and a slender table—whose polyurethane top displays a layer of corks underneath—seat about 25 guests, largely casual, older pairs of Upper East Side friends, many of whom are seasoned enough to know their varietals. For the less informed, the bar provides a guiding hand, organizing its predominantly Italian list of 60 wines under such headings as “Soft, Supple and Easy Drinking” and “Full Bodied and Robust,” and enhancing the experience by serving glassfuls in a mini-carafe. Among the big reds are a full, rounded Amarone and a dryer Barbaresco. Italian cheeses, meats, and finger sandwiches, along with pleasant surprises, such as a pastry filled with poached pears and Gorgonzola, complement the grape.
