Profile

Until recently, the Central Park Boathouse was a depressing place—an institutional refuge from sudden downpours, a Christmas-party host to dying dot-coms. But it's amazing what a $5 million makeover can do! The dining room has been spiffed up and opened up onto the lake, and while the menu is by no means daring—mostly seafood, none of it (thank God) fished out of the lake—the kitchen is on its toes. The crabcakes are big and come with a sweetish cucumber salad, and the roast haddock is a nice reprieve from yet another salmon plate. Once, you wouldn't bring your grandparents here. Now it's almost fit for a date (just make sure your beloved won't mind the opera-singing gondolier).

You can smoke at the patio bar!?!?

Yes. And there are ashtrays to encourage you. The patio area is quiet, overlooks the lake, and has one of the better cheese platters I've tried. Everything about The Boathouse is pleasant, except for the ocassional rude waitstaff, or bartender. Irregardless, this is a great place to just stop and get your bearings while soaking up some great Central Parkness, or take a few business clients for drinks. Lastly, it does make quite the location for a date. Casual, but not flipflops and ratty teeshirt. No pressure, good distance between tables... you get the point..

A Drink in the Park

The perfect antidote for the daily stresses of Manhattan. It could be the Catskills or Adirondacks, except for the skyscrapers and the other people at the bar. The Bloody Mary's can make a Sunday the first day of the rest of your life.
