For almost twenty years, its name has been synonymous with "Page Six" celebrity overindulgence. But lately, this grotesquely opulent monument to late-'80s kiss-kiss hedonism has abandoned any pretense of nightlife relevance, renting out its vast dance floor and Vegas-style amenities to an endless series of movie openings, wrap parties, record release shindigs and corporate carousals. Rod, Sly and Elle may not have been seen at China for a while (outside of the club's photo gallery), but the unironic excesses of owners Danny Fried and Michael Barrett's vision—the "China Blue" tile floor, jungle wall hangings and leopard print—are ready for them when they return.
China Club's celeb heyday of all-star "Pro-Jam" music events, the Rangers' Stanley Cup victory party and Monday "Model Nights" took place at its old location. The club moved into these 25,000-square-foot digs in January of '98.
A rooftop terrace is open to smokers during the summer and tented during the winter.
Summer Thursdays, 5pm-7pm, buffet and drink specials
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
