An unassuming First Avenue dive bar reminiscent of sister establishment International Bar (the two share the same ownership), Coal Yard is a diamond in the rough for those looking for a decent East Village watering hole that doesn’t involve flatscreen TVs and fratty company. Its black-painted entrance and cheap, cheap happy hours ($2 Bud drafts!) draw a mix of hipsters, NYU grad students, and displaced drinkers who once called the stools of Mars Bar home (R.I.P.).
