The décor of this chain's flagship Times Square location recalls an early 80s-era motel chain rather than a genuine pub: The three-story behemoth boasts heavy overdoses of cherry and oak wood, pre-fab Irish landscape paintings and flowery upholstery-covered bar stools. Large panes of frosted glass partition the first-floor bar tables from the booths in the eating area, while the second and third floors offer more free-flow between the suit-wearing diners and drinkers. There are 30 beers on tap, but aside from an added section dedicated to traditional Irish offerings like shepherd's pie and Irish beef stew, the food menu doesn't stray from the casual dining norm: moderately priced burgers, wraps, soups, salads, entrees and daily specials. While Connolly's other locations virtually mirror each other in terms of their edible offerings, the more disheveled, bi-level original space on West 54th Street is the best bet for those seeking an atmosphere filled with true old Irish soul.
ExtraTaking their name from the blackest year of the Irish Potato Famine, Celtic rock band Black 47 performs on the 3rd floor of the flagship pub every Saturday night.
