Punk rock meets fifties kitsch at this aquatic-themed way-West Chelsea club, where live "mermaids" (and "mermen") swim in gorgeous back-lit aquariums and hipsters convene for record release parties and performances by trendy local acts like Secret Machines and Moving Units. Weeknights find DJs spinning everything from new wave and rock to 4-on-the-floor house. A small VIP section in the back of the club overlooks the dance floor—yes, they have a cabaret license—and offers patrons a glimpse of the action through nautical portholes. Drinks are on the expensive side—the most expensive will run you $12. As some nights have a cover charge, it's a good idea to call in advance to find out exactly what to expect.
ExtraYou can rent the small VIP section in the back of the club, which overlooks the dance floor and offers a glimpse of the glam-rock action through nautical portholes—as well as a better view of the live mermaids swimming in the fish tank above the bar.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
