Old-time Upper West Siders were slow to welcome this Raccoon Lodge replacement, but they’ve been gradually coming around. It helps that the new management retained the down-to-earth staff of what was the local rough-and-tumble hangout for almost twenty years. Plus they’ve made a few changes to attract a new clientele: rock memorabilia where vintage advertisements once hung, a beer menu with a solid selection of bottled and draft imports. Choices run the gamut from a $5 pint of Stella to designer brews like Belgian Chimay and Quebec’s Fin du Monde. Fancy beers aside, the joint still has a worn-in dinginess—brown tin ceilings, a dull patina on the plank floors and wooden bar—that makes it, unmistakably, a dive. The rowdy mixed-age crowd, billiards table and touch-screen jukebox do their bit to enliven the drab interior but despite the diverse musical options you’re still more likely to hear Kid Rock than Muddy Waters.

New owners preserve the rough-and-ready vibe of an old neighborhood favorite.
