Sometimes, ten years isn’t nearly enough time to celebrate a decade. So there’s some good news for those of us who didn’t get enough of the eighties the first time around: Culture Club, which closed down its Varick Street location a few years ago—is back, and it’s wearing its legwarmers with pride, with three floors where DJ’s spin synth-heavy classics. The bar is decked out with day-glo renditions of 8-bit video game characters like Donkey Kong and Mario, and there are some nods to Star Wars and Back to the Future interspersed throughout. The $25 cover is a tough pill to swallow, and the scene tends to be composed of tourists looking for a ‘real’ New York City club experience (though the dress code is fairly casual) to bachelorette parties spreading mayhem through the streets. Whether it’s all worth it depends on if you think the 80s were radical or bogus.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
