The Cutting Room's spacious, unpretentious front bar-lounge has all the classiness of a private club from yesteryear, while the adjoining live-act venue adds a splash of rough-around-the-edges sass. Up front, brass chandeliers dangle from vaulted ceilings. The long, dark mahogany bar, velvet curtains and leather couches may seem incongruous with the tattooed rockers and decked-out fashionistas playing tabletop video games; the jukebox is an equally shake-it-up mix of classic rock (Hendrix, Joplin) and just plain classics (Sinatra, Dean Martin). Oversized art adorning the walls spans the centuries from Renaissance to modern—including a king-sized photograph of co-owner Chris Noth, better known as Sex & The City's Mr. Big. In the roomy, relaxed backroom, nightly live acts range from burlesque, jazz and rock groups to Joan Rivers's stand-up and Blitzkrieg: The Hassidic Pro Wrestling Musical. The global cuisine (served in both rooms) makes for mid-priced, above-average bar sustenance.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
