Hidden behind a tile façade with a black awning, Bum Bum (pronounced “Boom Boom”) has the exterior of a speakeasy, but inside, the predominantly Latin crowd is infinitely more extroverted than clandestine. A mixed, decades-spanning crowd of mostly butch-femme couples with a few paired men pack the cozy dance floor as they shuffle exuberantly to salsa and merengue beneath a huge mirror with the Manhattan skyline etched into it. Tables at the front and rear of the room accommodate parties of regulars who may be serenaded by a snazzed up version of “Happy Birthday” from the D.J. booth as wallflowers sip Colombian aguardiente and Mexican Piccala coffee liqueur.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
