Those seeking to channel their inner Liza Minnelli aren't obligated to claim the mic, but any trip to the unironically seedy cabaret in the back of Danny's Grand Sea Palace, a complex that also boasts a pre-theater seafood restaurant and a piano bar, will include spontaneous clapping and a boozy sing-a-long. Versatile accompanists sit at the baby grand six nights a week, playing vaguely jazzy lounge music under the eponymous skylight. While Danny's brims with gold Buddhas, a Jackie Mason poster, and the collected sediment of pop schlock, the small room is comprised mostly by heterosexual AARP members rather than the snarky kids with exaggerated haircuts who gather at similar throwbacks to the swinging 70s. A typical scene might find a seventysomething couple vigorously cutting a rug on the tiny dance floor while a cowboy-hatted torch singer croons old favorites from Elvis and Cole Porter. Don't look for a singles scene if you're under 55; just know that by walking in the door, you are among the very young at heart.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
