This traditional sports bar has, happily, been run through the BoCoCa filter. A cluster of easy chairs and plush sofas sits near the door, stained-glass candle holders glow on the bar, and the upscale beer list is a staggering 25 pages long—and listed by 30 nationalities. Twenty-one choices are on tap, including a few you’ll recognize: Saranac, Brooklyn, Dogfish, and the like. The list dips a toe into novelty with the $400–$500 a bottle ($20–$25 for a one-ounce glass) Sam Adams Utopia, a rare brew claiming to be the strongest commercial beer in the world. That there isn’t a happy hour to sample classier brews makes us a little sad, but Downtown is a layman’s sports bar where it counts: Table service offers nachos and burgers, and neon and flat screens cast a glow over a locals-heavy crowd.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
