Die Koelner Bierhalle's hangarlike space avoids boutique sensibilities in favor of a more traditional style like Bavaria's famous beer houses. The extensive beer list of more than 20 European drafts is written in blackletter font, and diligent readers are rewarded with liters of hefeweizen, Kölsch, lager, pilsner, and ale. Drinkers share long wooden tables, each lit by overhead fixtures, as they lean forward for conversation or back to place orders with any of the attentive servers keeping the spacious room sated. Everything is scaled up here, including the single projector TV hanging center-stage. The atmosphere accommodates groups and is decidedly family-friendly, though the U-shaped bar provides seating for singles and small parties. There’s also a menu of sausages, pretzels, and other German fare to munch on while downing beer by the half-liter or ordering one of the 40 imported bottles.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
