Profile

Despite sharing the name of Ireland's drunkest and most disorderly fair, Donnybrook is actually the kind of place that refuses to serve you a black and tan if they don't have the proper mixing spoon. It's muted class all around, from the young, affluent crowd to the smartly recycled décor: vintage wallpaper and sconces bought secondhand, tables hewn from thick heart pine salvaged from the old Bronx Republican Club. The lighting is so low you'd think someone forgot to pay the power bill, but the bar is well stocked with whiskeys and craft beers and features a nifty librarian's ladder—which the polite bartenders will not let you ride. You are more than welcome, however, to go to town on heavy Irish grub along the lines of sausage rolls and meat pies.

Rude Bartender

I was looking for a nice, quiet bar to enjoy a drink and read a book. When I got there I was finishing a conversation on my cell phone as I sat down at the end of the bar. The bartender, a young blond woman, came by to take my order. I put the phone down and asked for a beer. She refused to take my order until I hung up the phone. I then had to wait to order a drink while she left the bar to play on the floor with another patron's dog . When she was finally ready to take my order she went on to tell me that she expects anyone "new to her bar" to talk to her first before she serves them. She was rude and condescending. I am very disappointed by my experience. A bar is not meant to be the bartender's private club house. It isn't appropriate for the bartender expect each customer to have a conversation with her and obtain her approval to be served. It is probably because of the rude employees that this bar was almost empty while other bars in the area were crowded.
