Profile

“Some people say it looks like New Orleans, some say it looks like a bordello. I say it looks like my grandmother’s apartment,” says the Dove’s co-owner Jen Armstrong. In lieu of unseemly follow-up questions about granny’s profession, let it just be said that the broad’s got taste. Located a few steps below the street, the façade of white windowpanes gives way to a candlelit room with red velvet wallpaper, a Victorian ceiling mold, and a fireplace full of candles. An impressive drink menu boasts classics like sidecars and Champagne cocktails, plus tasty originals like the dastardly Rum Tea (white rum, honey, fresh citrus juices). The libations are served on dainty doilies in lieu of paper napkins to a smart but unpretentious crowd of young, artsy locals who appreciate the wide array of wines by the glass. In a neighborhood fraught with frat caps and tourist traps, the Dove is an excellent find. Like the House of the Rising Sun, it could be the ruin of many a girl or boy.

Extra

Some tattoo artists from MacDougal Street were among the bar's first regulars. Their drink of choice was a cross between an old-fashioned and a Manhattan. It consisted of bourbon, bitters, lime juice, and a splash of ginger ale, and was affectionately called “the Shit Weasel.”

Trademark Drink
The Honey Dove (cognac, honey, organic vanilla soy milk), $9

Great Atmosphere, Good Drinks, Cool Vibe

I went here for a friend's birthday party on a Saturday night. The waitress was pretty attentive though I always ended up going to the bar for drinks. The decor is very old school with dark red wallpaper, molding on the walls and ceiling, and a big, dark wooden bar. The music provided nice background noise, and it wasn't too loud so you couldn't have a conversation. My only semi-complaint would be that I found the staff to be somewhat aggressive. When they passed you by they practically pushed you out of their way even though there was usually ample room. I tried one of their specialty drinks--cherry tart and it was good, nothing amazing but good. Overall I had a great time and would definitely go back.

Best Bar in NYC

This is the best bar in NYC - for happy hour, at least. I have been at least a dozen times between 5-9 PM on weeknights and every last thing about going here is delightful - from the delicious drinks to the perfect decor to the music to the service. I can't vouch for weekends or late night, but if you're looking for a perfect date spot or pre-dinner drink, this is it.
