A block from the West Side highway and near a longstanding porno shop, The Dugout sits on the seedier side of Christopher Street. Inside, concrete floors and black walls give the interior all the charm of a factory office. On weeknights, the bare-bones haunt draws a quiet, sparse crowd of Village locals and the occasional New Jersey commuter. (The PATH is a couple blocks away.) Weekends lure the bar’s main audience: bears—the hairy, full-figured, slightly older, flannel- and cap-wearing counterpoint to Chelsea's manicured gay boys—and the cubs who love them. Easy-going and unpretentious, this crowd likes beer (lots of it), socializing, and a fair amount of bathroom cruising. If this sounds like you, then you may just have found yourself a second weekend home.
ExtraThe Dugout's popular Sunday beer blast, which runs from noon to 4 a.m., has 20 oz. drafts for just $4.
