With cheap drinks and free hot wings during happy hour, and a kitschy South of the Border shtick that would make Cheech Marin proud, this second-floor hideaway does its best to appeal to NYU students. As the speakers belt out a mariachi version of "I Will Survive," coeds and the occasional office gathering (under the influence of harsh tequila only partially neutralized by complimentary tortilla chips) are moved to dance, flirt, and stumble around claiming that it's their birthday. Among the eclectic nods to cultural Mexicana discernable through the flashing colored lights and the disco ball spangles are a mounted, massive stuffed blue marlin, a Mayan design painted on the ceiling, and a poster advertising a bullfight. Downstairs, a spacious dining room serves heaping platters of burritos and quesadillas but more civilized eating awaits at the wood deck terrace.
