After previous incarnations as Jasper Johns’s 1970s studio, a goth hotspot, and a gentleman’s club, this one-time bank is reborn once again, this time in the spirit of Limelight. The dance floor is as large as they come and voyeurs gaze down (through a miasma of lights and smoke) from a second floor balcony housing another bar, a roped-off, candle-lit VIP area, and a D.J. booth powered by a tenacious sound system. Downstairs, banquettes line the walls of a zen-minded Fire Lounge, but the club’s best element is the subterranean Vault, a catacomb of brick walls, vaulted ceilings, and fantastic custom-made lighting fixtures. Here, small groups (which can enter from the street) cluster in one of three narrow nooks that adjoin another dance floor and bar. Throughout the nightclub, an earthy décor of pounded bark, jagged slate, zebra wood, and sparkling mirrored wall installations reflects an equally eclectic approach to programming, with a schedule that leans toward soul and world-beat.
