Art lovers may cotton to this Emery Roth–designed building for its role in inspiring Georgia O’Keeffe’s New York Night. For everyone else, the Emery will probably be just a hotel bar, with all the attendant ups and downs. The prices are high, the music can settle into a groove you might call “annoying trance,” and, due to the transient nature of its customer base, there’s no real scene. However, the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable about the city and (more importantly) the classic cocktails that make up the bulk of the drinks menu (the negroni in particular should be the model for all future negronis). In the factory-issued, luxury-hotel vein, colors are muted, and crab cakes and sliders are on the menu.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
