The décor is minimal: a few tables with leather banquettes, beige curtains, two plasma-screen TVs, and a quartet of high-hanging canvases left over from a MoMA yard sale. The menu is extensive: Philly cheese steaks, a variety of salads, and ten kinds of sandwiches and wraps. Aside from the watery house brew (Epstein's Ale), the beers on tap are as predictable as the Top 40 play list. A two-for-one burger deal that uses the same meat as Corner Bistro draws a thrifty, discriminating crowd on Sundays. But if Epstein's falls on the generic side, it's not only what's inside that counts. The wraparound windows that open onto the street permit shameless people watching even when the kitchen shuts down early (which it's been known to do).
