Profile

The Emerald Isle presumably has more to offer than exposed beam ceilings, gnarled wood furnishings and well—drawn pints of Guinness, but Failte has at least got these essentials down. Gather 'round the large open hearth (perfect for drying wet mittens or spit—roasting a wild boar) or venture through enormous wrought-iron gates to shoot some pool in the back room. The menu is limited, but hell, it's Irish pub grub—who needs four courses? An upstairs lounge is for private parties, though the real fun of a place like this is doing rounds with strangers.

Extra

Failte, pronounced "FALL-cha," means welcome in Irish.

Love it here! It's nice, dark, and cozy inside with a fireplace. They have a pool table in the back and people aren't scummy about the rules and play a good game. Many different types of whiskey available and a good selection of bottled beers. It's a relaxing bar, not like one of those other Murray Hill joints around the area (Bar XII, Joshua Tree, etc.)

This is the place

Don't know that I had a typical experience here, but the ambience was terrific, even though the power was out and I couldn't get a Guinness. I made do with Jameson and had a nice chat with the Irish tourist seated next to me and with his friend the barman, himself an Irish immigrant. Just a great memory of the last night of my first trip to New York City and one I wouldn't mind repeating. As with any Irish pub, I suppose I'd take a date only if it was a steady girlfriend, not a lass I was trying to impress.
