Blink and you’ll miss the Irish community in Sunset Park: Situated on Fifth Avenue in the lower 60s, it rests like a fingerling potato between the tortilla that is the bustling Latino neighborhood to the west and the steamed bun that is Brooklyn’s Chinatown to the east. To do a mini-tour of this Littlest Ireland, you would hit the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, go down a block to Coraline Cafe and finally cross the street to Feeney’s, a quiet joint whose most remarkable features include arcade-poker machines, some old police hats and a hand-scrawled sign promising a “Fite Nite” between “Maddog” and “Boneyard.” If only. Feeney’s is like a Facebook for the older locals -- they drop in to gossip about regulars and talk about their likes (sturdy pension plans, Woodstock) and dislikes (the wife). Sometimes no one talks at all, and the sound of dueling refrigeration systems fills the void. At such a moment a solitary drinker can almost feel the universe staggering towards total entropy. Then a Chinese bootleg DVD seller will wander in, jarring everyone back into the present to order another beer.
