Separated from the hotel foyer by a thick black curtain, Gallery at the Gershwin is a nightclub whose music and energy bleed into the lobby as an invitation to guests (and their guests as well). Three distinct spaces offer varied decor, though a floral theme runs throughout; huge, suggestive prints of orchids dominate in some areas while a sexy red rose pattern acts as wallpaper elsewhere. The front room is coolly tiled in black and white with an under-lit bar stocked with cocktails emitting a subtle glow. The carpeted main section is bathed in crimson tones, with ample seating via big velvet banquettes and comfortable booths along a raised nook. In back is a perfect private party space—all deep woods and old-fashioned class transported to the disco era. Each night a different promoter takes charge so the scene changes radically depending on the sponsor. You’ll find Euro-techno out-of-towners on one night and homegrown hip-hop aficionados on another. The pick-up scene comes on strong but don’t let that deter you: Gallery is more down home fun than overzealous swank.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
