Profile

Since evicted tenant 13 Little Devils couldn’t hack it in this somewhat remote patch of BelDel, owners Darin Rubell, Joshua Boyd, and Derrek Vernon decided what the new place needed to succeed was a distinct identity: So the top floor, with its much larger, handsome bar and brown banquettes of cracked leather, now doubles as a gallery. (Suddenly, an art opening with a folding table laden with cheese and wine in plastic cups seems like an embarrassment.) Don’t care for the paintings or prints on the two floating walls at center? Make your own risqué portrait in the old-time photo booth near the rear D.J. booth. Downstairs is a tiny, low-ceilinged second bar where candles in Moroccan holders flicker against distressed mirrors. It’s no Studio 54 (like Rubell’s cousin Steve used to run), but the weathered wooden tables are a comfy place to perch.

A huge line when nobody was there...

We went to gallery bar for a friends birthday party. They had rented out the entire top section and we were on the guest list. When we arrived at 11:30 there was at least a 30 minute line that was just for private parties. After waiting in the line we got in only to see that the bar was half empty. Would not recommend it if you plan on having any of your friends actually being able to get in to your bday party.... and honestly wouldn't recommend it for anything else either. Don't force people to stand in line just so your bar seems cool...

The Gallery Bar, Up their Own Ass With Exclusivity

I made the mistake of choosing this bar for my 34th birthday gathering. I thought that with this tight economy, the Gallery Bar would appreciate my business: bringing 10 people, ready to spend money on drinks Friday night, after a long work week. But instead of being appreciated, I got a scolding from the smug girl who was carrying around the clip board and pen, denying people entry. That was after getting kicked out of two seating areas, which they claimed were reserved, but there were no reserved signs posted at these areas. I guess they're only interested in doing business with groups of people who are getting bottle service and racking up huge tabs. The crowd was sparse when I first got there, but slowly filled in a bit with young, bridge and tunnel groups. The bar tenders had the warmth and hospitality of the average NYC yellow cab driver. It's a bar with great potential, and from what I hear, it had once reached at least some of that potential. I wouldn't be surprised if that place doesn't exist this time next year.
