Out with Senor Swanky's, in with GMT Tavern, bringing with it an entirely different, Anglo-style swank. In keeping with its name (which stands for Greenwich Mean Time), a gigantic 24-hour railway clock presides over the room, which transports you out of this time zone with dim lighting, antique mirrors and romantic, old-world Victorian décor. The crowd is more mature than at the surrounding NYU bars, the atmosphere more intimate, and the drinks more expensive. Single malt Scotch and Irish whiskies are displayed in dispensers on either side of the clock above the bar, and the signature cocktails, like the GMTeatime (Absolut Wild Tea vodka, lemon juice, and honey water) and GMT punch (Beefeater dry gin, Pimms, lemon juice, seasonal fruit, and ginger ale) are deliciously strong. As any good English bar must, there's an extensive international beer list that includes large scale Chimays and Dupont for sharing, as well as bottles and drafts, like Southern Tier unearthly IPA and Full Sail Session Lager.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
