Gotham Comedy Club
208 W. 23rd St.
With its beautiful solid oak and copper bars, tasteful lighting and leather chairs and banquettes, Gotham Comedy Club looks more like a lounge than a laugh factory. And that’s sort of the idea. Founded by two comedians who were eager to add elegance to the herd-em-in, get-em-out, two-drink-minimum mentality of traditional comedy clubs, Gotham succeeds in fitting in with its fine, Flatiron District neighbors. Although the digs may be fancier, Gotham is first and foremost a comedy club and making people laugh (as well as drink—there’s still a minimum) remains its top priority. After spending time in the well-appointed vintage lounge, head upstairs to the main performance room, where regulars like the slyly funny Jim Gaffigan and the quietly cutting Todd Barry keep the room packed.
