Profile

You'd have to be high on something other than cantaloupe-flavored shisha to open up a hookah bar a few blocks away from king Karma. But the Egyptian owner of this boxcar-sized upstart did just that. Although the almost nonexistent lighting and the red walls—minimally appointed with bowls and fans—nod at his competition’s rep for illicit acts, the couches are better suited for post-work unwinding than late-night misbehavior...even if the place is open until 2 a.m. As for the shisha, it's available in 45 flavors, from the usual fruits and flowers to cola and cognac. (Mix them together if you're craving a smoked cocktail). The tobacco buzz is bolstered by a soundtrack that globe-trots from afro-beat to electric flamenco to Arabic dance.

Looking for something different? You'll be rewarded for asking what libations aren't on the menu much as you would at a Moroccan open-air market.

as a tourist from Belgium I went here with my NY friends on NYE and it was great. No fuss, great hookah (love that word).

A very nice place to unwind after a long week

At first look this place is just another hookah bar, with small wooden tables and a bunch of rugs on the floor. But once insideÂ… First of all you get a truly nice hookah, not the kind you get in other places in the city, NO this one is real Egyptian shisha, and that is not easy to come by in some of the other overrated places out there. The drinks are nothing special but the food is truly delightful and prepared with love. Best of all, is the people you meet wile relaxing on soft pillows and rugs, while ethnic Egyptian music takes you on the trip to the soul of the desert. Perfect for unwinding, or getting in the mood for the big night party. The owner Mohamed is very sweet and will do his best to make sure you are comfortable and at home. Definitely one of my favorite places to go in the city.
