Along with Timboo's and Jackie's 5th Amendment, Harry Boland's is part of a South Slope trifecta of local watering holes that exist primarily to slake the thirsts of a beefy, tattooed regular crowd. Yet Boland's, unlike its two sister joints, seems to be taking steps to make itself more welcoming to those looking to heft a casual pint. There are candles on the tables, amicable bartenders, and a wealth of interesting selections in the jukebox: U2, The Smiths, Meat Loaf, etc. Admittedly, even with these improvements, Boland's is hardly a destination in itself. Yet if you're in the area, you can't beat this roomy tavern for a round of darts on a rainy night or a spot of quiet conversation in a dimly lit corner. Should you be inspired to belch audibly, go for it. You just might get a round of applause and permanent membership in the club.
