Opened as a companion wine bar for the small but popular Vinegar Hill House next door, Hillside functions as a waiting area for restaurant diners, but it’s also a worthwhile destination in its own right. Exposed wooden beams on the ceiling and walls along with shelves filled with potted plants give the space the air of a Scandinavian-designed treehouse. Draft beer and a rotating selection of wines by the glass (heavy on European varietals like Rioja and Beaujolais nouveau) are served up alongside oysters and hearty small plates like house-made beef jerky and roasted bone marrow. Another standout feature: the large plate-glass windows up front which let you soak in the overgrown cobblestone-street charm of the neighborhood.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
