Living up to its name, this literal hole in the wall is quite the example of cunning marketing in action. The Hole targets a different slice of New York's omnisexual hipster scene on any given night, so you never know who you'll find hanging out amid the grime and graffiti. Cool lesbians, perhaps attracted to the vintage '80s exercise videos projected on a huge screen along one wall, turn out Friday nights, while trashy, self-consciously fashionable gay boys looking to get laid show up on Thursdays. The rest of the week belongs to a greasy (and straight) rock-and-roll crowd, though the vibe is always inclusive no matter who's around, making this a great place to come if you've got a mixed group of friends. Cheap drinks ($5 for beers and mixed), good music, a lax smoking policy, and plentiful couches make it easy to stay awhile.
