The greasy food is pricey and served by a surly waitstaff. So walk swiftly through the '50s-style dining room, past the saltwater taffy counter and comfy-looking orange booths, and make a beeline for the rear bar. You've entered Sweet Smell of Success New York, complete with a well-dressed bartender and a veritable Rainbow Coalition of drinkers. The place is always empty, in stark contrast to the Total Request Live groupie and tourist throngs milling outside the plate-glass windows. Don't look. Close your eyes, take a big gulp of your daiquiri, listen to the piped-in easy listening music and surrender yourself to your Great White Way fantasy. — Peter Landau
