Located on the corner of Manhattan and Nassau Avenues, just a short walk from McCarren Park, Polish bar Irene’s Place has yet to change with the rest of the Greenpoint neighborhood. The smoky enclave, which remains dark even on a sunny afternoon, with old linoleum floors and a stuffed Spuds McKenzie dog that sits behind the bar under strewn white Christmas lights, fills up with local Polish residents—mainly middle-aged males—who swig 16 oz. bottles of Zywiec and Tyskie beer and sing along to Polish tunes from the jukebox. You can take a seat at one of the two-top tables along the perimeter of the place, or at one of the worn red stools at the bar, and mindlessly stare at the muted TV in the corner, though the scene here can often be engrossing enough for your own live entertainment.
