It looks like a giant cinder block from the outside, but it’d be a shame to skip it: Irish Haven is the rare, honest-to-goodness Irish pub, owned and staffed by real, live, brogue-voiced Irishmen (and one delightful Irishwoman). It doesn’t feel much like Sunset Park in here: hushed, cozy, dark, smoky (yes, so far they’ve escaped the notice of Mayor Bloomberg), with a rotating cast of craggy-faced regulars. Within minutes of entering, one of them is sure to boast to you that The Departed was filmed here, and the owners need no encouragement to tell the whole tale. Pick your favorite song from the jukebox and settle back to hear the stories tumbling forth.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
