The red brick walls and copper ceiling of Jake’s give the pub mini-chain’s Hell’s Kitchen location a gritty, old–New York feel—it’s easy to imagine Boss Tweed and his underlings staging some backdoor dealings in a corner. Instead, the bar is frequented primarily by the neighborhood’s more mature locals (younger denizens typically don't stray past Ninth Avenue). Most of the pub-grub menu is middling, although the burgers and fries are delicious. Ultimately, it’s a completely adequate place for a beer and a game, as the pub’s televisions carry most major pro and college sports packages.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
