Tucked into a basement in the same Greenwich Village house where Janis Joplin used to live (and, apparently, the site of the first Diana Ross performance ever), “Janis” tries to keep true to its sixties bohemian roots, at least in the looks department. Red leather banquettes that look culled from a vintage go-go bar, candlelit tables, elegantly exposed wood-beam ceiling, even an American flag strung up in the corner: All these items seek to conjure nostalgia for the Village’s freewheeling, long-dead bohemian past, though pretty unconvincingly, since the present day lurks just upstairs, in the form of one of the more chi-chi restaurants (De Santos) on the block. Still, the kids seem to be buying it: This lounge readily attracts the beautiful people.
