A few steps below St. Marks Place, Japas at first seems like an overlooked nook. But after ringing the doorbell and getting buzzed into this narrow subterranean karaoke cavern (brick walls, sponged cave-like ceilings, sconces, mirrors), you'll encounter a diverse clientele of young Japanese, NYU students, a smattering of businessmen, and a few real singing pros. Nervous Nellies can loosen up with the aid of a lengthy spirits menu or a respectable selection of Japanese beers, but the real lubricant, aside from the two-drink minimum, is the communal atmosphere. With no stage or private rooms, aspiring chanteuses and crooners must unleash their inner-Britneys from where they sit, or for the brave among them, from where they stand. Larger groups head towards the back where they cram into a few coveted booths to make their selections from a binder of all the popular standards. On three large monitors, so-bad-they're-good videos are accompanied by lyrics big enough for everyone to join in to drown out any off-key warblers.

There's no cover but there is a two drink minimum, and songs will run you a buck a pop.
