The stern dark curtains that conceal this tiny Avenue B bar and bistro from prying eyes lend it the air of a swank private supper club or the feel of the malevolent brothel called "One Eyed Jacks" from TV's Twin Peaks. This isn't surprising since Joey's is owned by the team that opened and closed the hot spot Moomba. Happily, this warm, laid-back haven manages to be popular without being pretentious. There are a dozen-or-so austerely lined tables in the restaurant, which serves comfort food into the wee hours of the night. Homemade mac and cheese, chicken fingers with fries, and for the purists, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with optional bacon and banana slices—it all goes great with a round of Monopoly, just one of a dozen classic board games Joey's keeps stacked in the back corner. And the large, tented backyard is an ideal place to lounge, regardless of the weather.
