Forty-eighth and Second is a strange spot for a karaoke bar: there are no Korean BBQ spots or NYU kids for blocks and blocks. Which explains why the east-side location of this mini-chain is so conveniently sparsely populated—no need for advance planning to warble “Eye of the Tiger” here. As with most Asian-style karaoke joints, Duet only has private spaces: The small rooms hold up to four people and are decidedly cell-like; the largest are a little more disco, with metallic couches and sparkly gray walls. Each room comes equipped with a phone hooked up to the bar, so you can order a sochu cocktail or a Japanese snack without missing a note. The song book is 17,000 titles strong, with new selections added monthly.
