Kemia's elegant, souk-like interior, with its high ceilings tented in roseate fabric, is bewitching at first glance. The main room has a gracious Balthazar feel—with a glossy lacquered bar and formal seating under hanging lanterns—while the smaller low-ceilinged room has the intimate charm of a private parlor. True, some aspects of the décor have seen better days—the plushly upholstered red banquettes are stained with candlewax, and some of the tapestries have frayed edges—but somehow these tiny imperfections just add to the space's blowsy charm. After all, with its unhip location and unassuming exterior, Kemia isn’t pretending to be some velvet-roped scene. It's simply a fantastic place to take that closing-the-deal date. An ideal Kemia experience involves a dimly lit corner (and there are plenty), a plate of delicate brioche-battered shrimp, a small dish of aromatic hummus, and a pair of fruity yet secretly strong pineapple Flirtinis. Next stop: Bedroom.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
