Found down a steep stairwell and a dim hallway is this elegant English hideaway bedecked in swinging lanterns. There’s no sign out front, so you might have more luck arriving through the passageway from Antik (the upstairs lounge from the same owners). The drink selection is a mild spectrum of beers and the liquor choices are limited, but the bar’s creative use of space keeps up the intrigue. Challenged with a basement’s limited breadth, opportunities for disappearing are somehow bountiful and design flourishes like wrought-iron-legged oak tables to leaden touches like flocked wallpaper and faux gas-lamps leave plenty to digest. Meanwhile, the leather booths and banquettes, and the manicured, but warm bar area, keep this speakeasy-meets-rec-room comfy.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
