With no sign out front, this elegant English hideaway is found down a steep stairwell and a dim hallway is bedecked in swinging lanterns. The drink selection is a mild spectrum of beers and the liquor choices are limited, but the bar’s creative use of space keeps up the intrigue. Challenged with a basement’s limited breadth, opportunities for disappearing are somehow bountiful and design flourishes like wrought-iron-legged oak tables to leaden touches like flocked wallpaper and faux gas-lamps leave plenty to digest. Meanwhile, the leather booths and banquettes, and the manicured, but warm bar area, keep this speakeasy-meets-rec-room comfy.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
