Some might call Lair’s vibe confused—gothic boudoir-meets-Asian opium den-meets-wall of cave drawings—but somehow, it works, and if you go at the right time, it’ll be too dark to notice anyway. A DJ booth towers above the lounge area, blasting standard dance hits, while a small dining area in the back is given some semblance of privacy behind a chain mail curtain. The bar has an intriguing list of Asian-influenced cocktails that are worth the embarrassment of ordering them by name; the “Mr. Hot Pants,” for example, is a complex, spicy blend of mescal, tequila, Campari, passion fruit, and Thai chili pepper agave. Go for a late dinner—the menu is by Chris Cheung, formerly of Nobu—and wait for the crowd to fill in around midnight.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
