Profile

Ever since irascible-lovable Steve Dunleavy stumbled upon this Irish pub, it's been home away from home for New York Post journos—even Rupert Murdoch himself can be seen on occasion. The paper's columnists have been such regulars that Langan's has immortalized them, with a portrait of Dunleavy etched into one of the glass partitions and a corner featuring a photo of the late, great gossip Neal Travis.

Mistaken Identity

We visited Langans thinking it was connected with the excellent London restaurant of that name, be warned, it isn't, although a photo of actor Michael Caine, London Langans co-owner, is prominently displayed. My meal came so late the other guests had to start eating or theirs would have been cold. My fish was cold when it arrived (possibly still partly frozen) and the batter was uncooked inside. A gentle complaint brought a snarl from the server who took back the plate then returned with the same fish, I could tell because I'd cut into it, it had been burnt until the batter was black. I have a photo to prove it. We paid and left. I was then followed into the street by another server who complained I had not left a tip and I was advised not to come back. Don't worry, I won't.

Maybe you can trip up Steve Dunleavy

My husband and I frequent Langan's on Friday eves. One night, Steve Dunleavy, famously inebriated and wearing giant, black, thick eyeglasses, stumbled into us and then charmingly accused us of tripping him. We bantered with him for a few minutes (he's very drole, even drunk) and then the hostess appeared and escorted him to his waiting taxicab. Langan's has NY spirit & spontaneity. Tried other bars on Fri after work and nothing else measures up. They play a nice selection of recorded music - eclectic and always pleasing somehow. They feature a wonderful Irish waitstaff with warm personalities. The free hot hors d'oeuvres make the NYC priced cocktails seem inexpensive. And if you're dining there and want something special, your waitress will surprise you with a concoction from the bar. This place is NYC at its finest...a comfortable, friendly, very appealing spot in the theater district. Go there and feel like you've come home.
