This intimate hotel lounge designed by David Rockwell is successfully functional. The scattered furniture—large meeting tables, smaller ones for duos and trios, and reading chairs tucked into corners—accommodates tete a tetes between lunchtime ladies with well-coifed hair and/or business men in unbuttoned oxfords. A painted banner of quintessential New York landmarks stretches across two walls, and Michael Feinstein’s photos depict contemporary authors poised in their offices. But for the athletes, 20-somethings and decades-loyal regulars, eyes tend to stay focused on the flat screen TVs playing CNN, FOX, or the ballgame. — Shira Levine
