This intimate hotel lounge designed by David Rockwell is successfully functional. The scattered furniture—large meeting tables, smaller ones for duos and trios, and reading chairs tucked into corners—accommodates tete a tetes between lunchtime ladies with well-coifed hair and/or business men in unbuttoned oxfords while the dark wooden mantel stocked with quirky titles such as The Quaker Way of Life and Executive Jobs Unlimited provides distraction for those leery of eavesdroppers. A painted banner of quintessential New York landmarks stretches across two walls, and Michael Feinstein’s photos depict contemporary authors poised in their offices. But for the athletes, 20-somethings and decades-loyal regulars, eyes tend to stay focused on the flat screen TVs playing CNN, FOX, or the ballgame. — Shira Levine
