Lest the name inspire fantasies of danger or mystery, take note: This live-music NYU hangout is pretty much a big wooden box, largely unadorned, save for a few torn posters from the last mushroom-logo-ed band that graced its small, low stage. Don’t expect to find the next hot indie group (or the idolatrous kids who follow them) here; instead, jazz-funk musicians do the 15-minute guitar or keyboard solo justice every night. Although bookers occasionally lure marquee names like Ben Folds, Jazz Mandolin Project, or members from Phish and Parliament, shows are reasonably-priced for students. Because of a not-so-strategic lighting and a not-so-killer sound system, you’re unlikely to hear or to see your drinking buddies unless you’re huddled over one of four small tables, but quality booze gives incentive to shut up and rock out. Ask a bartender for the house specialty in lieu of the usual tap beers and you may get the decidedly non-dingy French Martini, a frothy blend of Stoli Vanilla, Chambord, and pineapple juice that takes the edge off the jams.
