To its credit, Local 138 successfully brings together several disparate elements to make a swell neighborhood lounge. The rock tracks that are always playing attract hipsters who might otherwise gravitate to Max Fish or Pianos up the street. But the music is seemingly at odds with the wood-paneled walls, which give the small space a more old-fashioned, pub-like feel. The TVs over the bar area are usually tuned to sports and run counter to the sophisticated back room which aims for a more upscale vibe and is popular for private parties. But it all manages to coexist in perfect harmony, thanks in part to the benevolent bartenders, friendly patrons, and cheap well drinks.
