Remember the Cinemax thriller where the detective infiltrates a rave in a trippy underground club? This unmarked basement spot on an otherwise diurnal block (it’s tucked under a barber shop) is just that place. The small barroom simulates a cave with faux stone walls and a candle display. In a small room on the other side of a waterfall, couples hide in the shadows of a fuzz-covered bunk bed-like structure, blissing out to mirrored orbs. Think Fraggle Rock on acid. Another room outfitted in blacklight art leads into the main room where a diverse, gay-friendly crowd of retro-stylish types and NYU-sters groove to progressive house, electronic, and the occasional rhythm-minded live act. The party starts late, so ride the Red Bull and feel free to nap in one of the nooks.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
