When I wonder aloud which neighborhood Lowlands Bar technically falls in, co-owner Paul replies, “We don’t really know. It’s not really South Slope or Gowanus. We just call it the Lowlands.” Even though bustling Fifth Avenue is just two blocks away, Lowlands is surrounded by empty buildings, residential brownstones, and a gas station whose light bulb troubles leave it advertising “_4 hour service!” But inside, dim lighting, tassled chandeliers, and the same antler-like light fixtures as sister bar Abilene set the mood. Beach Boys remixes play when the turntables behind the bar are still. If you wander past the bar you’ll get to the best part. Six picnic tables populate the well-lit (seriously, to the point of daylight) back patio, perfect for a quiet beer on a balmy night. Cocktails don’t stray far from their delicious Bloody Marys, but 12 beers on tap and more bottles keep the selection interesting.

Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
