If you’ve found your way to Lucid—a tiny, enclosed club within Pressure, the sprawling lounge above Bowlmor Lanes—let’s hope you’re headed to a private shindig with thirty best friends in tow. On a normal night, there isn’t much of a crowd or scene to speak of here, and Lucid seems tailor-made for intimate gatherings. It’s a low-ceilinged, narrow place that’s almost too funky for its own good (a few flat-screen TVs display psychedelic screensavers). A bronze, squishy banquette curves alongside one wall, resting on a slightly elevated floor illuminated in flashing shades of neon. Rectangular window slits offer peeks at Pressure outside, adding to the impression of being in your own secret, trippy, flashy, fun hideout. Out in the open, Pressure’s vast, domed space gives off even more of a ‘60s vibe, with its fluorescent lights; purple and grey carpet designed with playful Pop Art-style bubbles; bright red retro sofas; a white canopied and double-sided bar; and similar psychedelic TV displays. Also similar to Lucid: Pressure’s paltry number of patrons (a handful of NYU students and hipsters shooting pool) is a downer.
